Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Be Mindful & Get Back in Control
How Dialectical Behavior Therapy Works
Introduced in the 1980s by Dr. Marsha Linehan, DBT works on changing the way you may view things so you can find balance. It addresses the “all or nothing” mentality many people can have and instead promotes a mentality where opposite perspectives exist. DBT encourages you to complete therapy exercises, role-play relationship problems, and learn about key life skills, such as: as distress tolerance (learning to handle intense emotion without impulsive or self-harming behavior), emotion regulation (understanding, recognizing, and effectively adjusting to emotions), mindfulness (being more aware of others as well as yourself and being present in the moment and interpersonal effectiveness (navigating relationship with others and effectively handling conflict). These skills are taught and practiced so that the patient will be able to apply them throughout their lifetime.
What to Expect from Dialectical Behavior Therapy
DBT therapy takes place in the form of individual therapy and in skills groups. In individual therapy, your therapist will work with you on staying motivated, learning about DBT, and coming up with strategies to manage emotions and achieve more mindfulness. In a DBT skills group, you can expect to learn about and practice DBT skills in a group setting where a trained therapist guides you through exercises. This can include mindfulness exercises or lectures where you learn about skills. DBT often involves homework assignments in which you’ll be expected to work through exercises outside of therapy and bring in completed assignments to discuss.
